The new gas station at the Silvis Hy-Vee opened Tuesday, and the pharmacy is expected to open in a few days, city inspector Tom Lupinski told the city council Tuesday.
He said construction on the gas station, off 5th Street and Hospital Road, started in November. In addition to gas, the station offers gourmet coffee, slushies, popcorn and other items. "They're pumping gas and the whole nine yards," he said.
Mr. Lupinski said the remodel on the main Hy-Vee store, across from the gas station, is going well. Besides the pharmacy, there's a new wine and spirits department open, and an international restaurant is half done.
Hy-Vee Weitz is general contractor on the project, and has built the same type of structure at Hy-Vees around the country, Mr. Lupinski said, adding that he expects all construction to be done by September.
Mr. Lupinski also said he's monitoring construction on five new homes in town, and expects housing and commercial construction to continue at a steady pace this spring. "I think a good mix is what it looks like if things go good."
In other business, the council:
--Learned Valley Construction had the low bid for the 10th Street resurfacing project at $466,488.15. The city's portion of the project will be about $118,000, and the state is expected to fund the rest.
Mayor Bill Fox said part of the project could be in a TIF district, which would reduce the amount the city would have to provide. A Finance Committee meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday to discuss the project.
